Since it first began I have always been a huge Buffy the vampire slayer fan. So much that the last several years I’ve gone to conventions to meet buffy stars, so when I saw this book in trago mills for 75p I couldn’t resist getting it. Then I found out its was like a book I haven’t read since early 90s. Though in 90s these type books was generally you where in inspector. In suicide king you are the slayer and get to pick where you go and what happens when you get there. I love this type of reading because you are an active member of the world your reading. I found myself often killed mainly because I always choose to go to Willys bars because really who wouldn’t want to beat up billy the snitch. I had great time playing around with this book and love It. Its not quiet snoopy dancing with xander (which ive done but it is a great read. You don’t really have to be a buffy fan as you can see it as a role play game I wish there was more of these style books in other fandoms Ilike. Hunger games would be a fantastic one. But for now I shall amuse myself with buffy 😀
So I was going to keep this blog purely about books but I spent the weekend at Cardiff comic con and thought Id share my views. Now I’m a old hand at conventions and signings. I choose to go to Cardiff because James Marsters was supposed to be there unfortunely he pulled out last minute. usually I don’t go for just one guest and the only reason I chose Cardiff was that a lot of my convention friends lived there anyway.
Its always good to hang out with people who like the same tv shows films or anime as you because in normal life its usually frowned upon but at conventions its the greatest thing in the world to be around people who understand your love of things. Now I met a girl who love Snape which is someone im obsessed with to the point pretty much everyone in my life has told me at some point that its not a health to worship someone that much but I finally sound someone who understood and it was great.
Now here’s the negative things about the cons and that’s the prices of tickets and guest talks. When it comes to conventions you can usually see what guest are there for the love of the fans and what are there solely for the money.
The first talk of the sunday I went to was game of thrones as Iain Glenn pulled out it was only Daneil Portman and Fintan McGowen. First thing I disliked about the talk was directly in front of me was a women with 2 young children. Which if I had to guess they couldn’t have been more than 6 or 8. Given that it was game of thrones I was thinking what the hell was she doing there anyway. The questions started to be asked and Daneil portam was giving answers and he said his favourite scene to film was the brothel scene. the woman rudely got up making tutting noises dragging her children out of the room. Now if it was the doctor who talk or something other family friendly then fair enough but it was games of thrones. what exactly did you expect. She should of been at the LFCC 2 years ago where Perter Dinkagle and Jason Momonas tv screening went something along the lines of. peter going “dead dead no cock so might as whell be dead. Ah Bram his mum in real life id shag her. ” Jason momonas “that makes two of us” What was also disappointing in the talk was Fintan McGowen when asked who he would like to see end on the throne he’s response was simply I don’t care. DAneil Portman tried to save the question but giving in depth detail. when asked what house their characters should be in and what their real selves should be in again daneil gave a complete answer and why where Fintan for some random reason just talked about he liked riding his horse with no mention of his house at all it was blatently clear he had never watched or read anything but the 4 episode he was in and a poor choice to have as a guest. I have never been in such a poor talk.
I was pleasenty surprised at Jack Donnelly he was very nice and kind and Jessie Cave was also lovely and had a heir of lunar lovegod about her.
Gettingnto the event itself was easy and the dealers table far cheaper than you find at lfcc .
I only just started the Courtlight series. Usally I will wait till end of series till I review but I have entered many book fb competitions and this is the first time I’ve ever won so Im excited and so fair to talk about. This series mixes old world new world and magic when I think of the descriptions Ciardis give of the places where she goes and what she see’s I picture 18 century grandeur and poverty.
This series also remind me a lot of the selection series by Kiera Cass Ciardis has gone from a clothes washer to an elite with powers she never knew she had and no way of knowing how and if she would control them.
In this centre everybody wants to be sold to the highest bidder and depending on which power you own will depend on which person will go after you really Ciardis has to options. go for the General who is old and needs someone to provide him with children or go for a prince who is disguised as a noble because if people where to discover they would both b e in great peril.
Ciardis must choose between what is right and what is easy and preferable avoid the sprit lands that the prince usually calls her to. But if she stops helping the prince the kingdom will be in great peril.
I enjoyed the first book of the courtlight series and amm looking forward to reading the rest
Today is a sad day to book fans the world over. Sir Terry Prachett was one of my favourite authors growing up and in fact the first author signing I went to was to meet him. Wyrd sisters is one of my favourite books. Publically Prachett came of as a loveable old man but he was also fighting alzimers a disease that essentially strips you of all you are. Yet he continued to publish work until the very end.
Sir Pratchett was one of the founders of fantasy and nobody has ever written quite like him all I can say is thank you for bringing magic into my life.
The Lunar Chronicles is a great futuristic telling of everyday fairy tales retold in a very different way. Cinder is a fantastic character that whilst being cyborg is more human than anyone she has more depth and life than many characters combined. As the series progresses she meets other fairy tale heroines that have there own hardships each having to decide if they wish to follow there heart follow the law or realise that freedom comes at to high a price.
Now when it comes to the lunar chronicles I had no doubt in my mind that I would love the series. Before I had ever read it. When people think of fanfiction most go to smut and things like 50 shades of grey. Yes there are a lot of fanfiction like that and there is also a lot of poor fanfiction. However not all of fanfiction is and some are just ways of people expressing thereself.
I have known Marissa Meyer’s work for many years only I knew it under the name Alicia Blade. I love sailormoon and her sailormoon fanfictiction is the best I have ever read. Even all the books I own and stories and fanfiction I’ve ever read I never get bored of Alicia Blade fanfiction especially saying goodbye to Dorothy Smith.
I’m glad that some of the most truly creative and amazing fanfiction authors are now getting into mainstream as well as some of the not so great ones. If you love the lunar chronicles and want to read how well and how long she has been producing amazing stories check out her fanfiction
As like all the books I’ve posted today this focuses on teenage death. Unlike the others there’s no it could be suicide or was it might end that way. This was a planned and organised suicide that the character Hannah had planned and ensured that even if she was dead she would make those that drove her to it pay for what they had done to her in the past.
The book starts on Clay Jensen receiving a package only to find tapes and reasons she had given her reasons for wanting to die. The 13 reasons where 13 student all had upset her in the past with the exception of Clay the reason Clay was the last person to receive the tapes was because she had been in love with him. In her eyes he never saw her so as her departing piece of life that she left was a direct blow at the person she supposedly loved the most.
Now I understand better the want and suicidal addition more than most. But one thing I know more than anything is that its the biggest death that will leaving the living with the questions off why. But as hard as it is for many people to understand if you get yourself into a truly suicidal mind set there is nothing you can do to stop them.
This book makes it look like if each character had not done a specific thing to Hannah she wouldn’t have killed herself. As Clay goes through the tapes he see the other people blamed for the way Hannah saw them not the way he once did. When he got down to the last tape and found that his role was love it made the book more emotive.
She could deal with the pain of bullying and verbal abuse but she couldn’t cope with love. that’s the thing many people miss depression sometimes stops people getting suicidal because they cant function enough but add the idea of something positive to the mix suicide seems like a good option.
Whilst 13 reasons isn’t on my favourite list I can certainly see why it was written and I feel its important to have books out there that show the consequences people make can bring so many others down with you and can change so many lives
When a boating accident cause Olga to lose her best friend Conner she finds herself unable to cope with the loss. Going back to school she feels like everyone wishes she was the one that had died and she kind of agrees with them. When she gets home she takes to many pills not with the intention to kill herself but more to cope with numbing the pain. Of course sometimes things you think you can stop the pain can make it that much worse.
The book jumps to a little while latter and Olga is in therapy due to the “pill incident” and whilst there she meets Nate a loveable guy who got moved into Olga village after he had a car accident he was driving to fast and he was deemed by his parents to be a danger and forced into therapy.
As part of Olga therapy session she was told by the therapist to come up with 18 things she wanted to do or see and then where humanly possible make them happen. Nate also liked this idea and decided to help Olga in her quest and then started a 18 things to do list for himself as well. Pretty soon All Olga’s friends and classmates had picked up the idea of doing 18 things.
Olga’s list included things like breaking out in the middle of the night, riding around on the world biggest rollercoaster, living the day by what ever the magic 8 ball says . Things that might seem small or big to others but all where big to Olga herself.
18 things helped Olga transition from the fact she wasn’t with Connor her and Nate’s Final therapy session left them both realising that something’s you get to move on from and some things you don’t, or at least you don’t move on the way you think you do.
I saw the ending coming a mile away but know some of my friends where shocked if you you like the tv show being Ericka then this book is really for you.
Yesterday I talked about the philosophy and psychology of death in John Green’s books. Todays book blogs are going to be about how we are now seeing them more and more in young adult section and how the books manage to help people understand the grief and get some handle on death. Honestly I wished there were more books like this when I was a teenager because the books are beautiful heartfelt and break you whilst putting you back together at the same time.
Love letters to the dead is about a girl called Laurel who’s sister died and she feels guilty and she felt that she was to blame for May’s death. When a teacher gives her the assignment to write a letter to someone who’s dead. The assignment takes its own role in helping Laurel gain a sense of her own identity instead of holding on to the memories of her sister. Where at the beginning of the book Laurel wishes to be just like May. She learns that her sister wasn’t as perfect as she had made her in her head.
Using the assignment as a tool to speak to people that no longer exist she ask questions to people like kurt Kobain (her sister mays favourite music star) what drew them into death. what its like to be so young to die. Throughout the book the questions and letters Laurel writes to artist and stars like Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Winehouse are beautifully thought out and thought provoking and the letters decrease through the book because Laurel learns the thing you need to learn about is life and not death is that you have to live it. During the book Laurel gets a boyfriend named Sky who teaches her that Living the way May did will only get her killed in the same fashion.
Sky is the perfect character to be with Laurel and help her see that nothing is as black and white as you think its is and that living in the grey is okay so long as you remember to live. Where the original assignment was only supposed to be one letter Laurel never handed it in until the end of the school year at which point it was practically a diary that she gave to the teacher essentially leaving her ghost behind and allowing her to become own person .
There are so many thought provoking notions in John’s books its hard to narrow them down and even then the questions just lead to more questions. Some of his statements are plain truths that some people believe whilst others cant. He’s right in the concept the world isn’t a wish granting factory yet however impossible things may be we continue to wish for the changes that are out of our hands.
A friend of mine read looking for Alaska recently and when I first asked him what he though of it he said he enjoyed it. After that he had a few choice words about how I’m always getting him to read books where a character’s going to die. But I had a message of him tonight as he had re read the book and goes wait she wasn’t in an accident it was suicide. The thing is that’s about looking for Alaska. both could of been plausible and it was left open for your own opinion. In my view I had no doubt that it was suicide. The page in her book for homework “how do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering” where Alaska wrote “straight and fast.” clinched it for me. Where the other response is “how do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.”
John saying in his vlogbrothers videos that once the book is in the reader hands it no longer belongs to him but to the reader. In essence I’m right in my assumption it was suicide and my friend was right it was a car accident. In fact there could be a third option Alaska was testing death neither meaning to kill her self but being okay with the option if it worked that way.
Which ever the reason for Alaska death it had the add on of Pudge life of being left to deal with his pain and not understanding the reason why it happened and if it was ever his fault was it the last straw that broke her. In the fault in our stars Hazel pushes people away because she think she’s a grenade. (and says so on more than one occasion) In reality all of us are Alaska hiding her depression is every bit as destructive as Hazels cancer.
Most people think that Hazel suffers the bigger tragedy in the fault in our stars and hers was great but others where just as great as if not more. Isaac pre funeral speech of he didn’t want to see a world without his best friend is heart breaking because he lost he’s eye sight he’s losing his best friend and his best friends girlfriend who is also terminal and he would be left.
I’ve lost friends to suicide, cancer and accident and there are large chunks of it I fallen into Alaska mind set but the debate with my friend left me questioning the arguments on all sides. Both book are so different yet so similar just the polar ends of death. The physical and the psychological and how each play on each other. Im not sure if I’ve read anything like it from a different author. Its also why they make such great reads they make you think and those thoughts are your own not all Johns work. even if the quotes are Johns.
Early Anita Blake is a fast moving supernatural book with Anita being witty sarcastic and tough as nails. she also a vampire hunter necromancer. The early Character’s introduced had primal wants and needs Jean Claude is the kind of bad ass brooding vampire most women want. Edward is an assassin who is pretty much the ultimate hard man who likes to play with shiny weapons and big guns. These things can only ever lead to awesome things.
The first 12 in the book series are a good read and if I was to recommend one book it would be obsidian butterfly from the series because Anita get into her first real fire fight and the results are amusing not to mention the fact a serial killer get the hot’s for her because of how she handled herself and killing of the ancient monsters.
Whilst each book Anitas powers grow or mutate she ends up becoming a shifter and the books have gone from great story telling to just smut. Sometimes I think I wont read the next one but then always end up doing so. The reason for this is when she gets the story right its something that is a very good read. Problem is I feel that there to many leads and the course of the story’s have hit its and there are to many main characters who end up in her enthral and there nothing that gets done about having sex.
There are some fantastic characters within the books but sometimes I think series should of finished years before they did. I loved early sarcastic Anita who has conviction of her actions and always does what’s right not what she needs to do to save one of her lovers.
If you like vampire novels like Anne rice then you will probably like the Anita Blake series. Personally I loved the first ones but there has got to come a point where you need to move onto a different story or a different world else it take away the enjoyment of the earlier books.
